تدور أحداث الرواية في إطار من الخيال العلمي والديستوبيا حول عالم سفلي يُدعى "أركون"، وهو مدينة مظلمة تقع تحت أنقضاض الأرض بـ كيلومترات، يعيش سكانها في سجن معزول محاط بأسلاك ومصنوعات معدنية ويقتاتون على ضوء صناعي تُنتجه "البلورة الكبرى".
تكتشف البطلة لوسيندا (عالمة الطاقة في المفاعل) الشفرة الحقيقية وراء هذا الضوء؛ حيث يتضح أن المصابيح لا تُضيء عبر طاقة نظيفة بل عبر استنزاف أرواح وكائنات مجهرية مسجونة تتعذب لإمداد المدينة بالكهرباء. بعد اكتشافها لهذه الحقيقة وملاحقة الأمن المركزي لها، تبدأ رحلة فرار لوسيندا برفقة زميلها إلياس نحو الأعماق السفلية ("القاع الأسود") حيث تلتقي بالمقاومة ("المنسيون") وتكتشف أن والدها قد عدّل شفرتها الوراثية لتكون هي صلة الوصل والمفتاح الفعلي لتحرير هذه الطاقة.
تواجه لوسيندا صراعات معقدة وخيانات من قائد المقاومة "أركان" وقوات الأمن برئاسة "عزمي" الذين يسعون لاستغلالها كـ "بطارية متطورة". وفي النهاية، تُضحي لوسيندا بـ "بشريتها" لتندمج روحًا وجسدًا مع البلورة الأم داخل المفاعل، مُطلقة نبضة طاقة ذهبية نقية تبدد سحب الدخان وتفتح بوابات السطح. يخرج إلياس وبقية البشر إلى العالم الخارجي ليروا الشمس الحقيقية والمطر لأول مرة، بينما تتحول لوسيندا إلى النور الحقيقي الذي يُدفئ الأرض ويمنحها الحياة من جديد.
