هذا الكتاب: يقدم مسحاً نقدياً و تاريخياً عريضاً و واضحاً لاحد السجلات الأساسية في فلسفة العقل: علاقة العقل و الجسد. هذه المشكلة التي تستمر في إثارة الأسئلة العميقة المتعلقة بطبيعة الانسان. و للكتاب هدفان مركزيان: الأول هو تلخيص المساهمات الحديثة الكبرى في هذه المشكلة من جانب فلاسفة العقل. من بين المفكرين و النظريات الذين يشملهم نذكر الوضعية الجديدة المنطقية لهربرت فايغل, أعمال المدرسة الأوسترالية, بليس, سمارت, أرمسترونغ. وظيفانية فودور و بوتنام و مواقف بعض أتباع فيتغنشتاين, مالكوم , برنشتاين, و مواقف رورتي, غرين, ناغل, دريفوس, و مارغوليس. إن البروفسور مورافيا و قد رسم هذا الاطار يسعى لتحقيق هدفه الثاني: الاعلان عن قراءة خاصة للعقلي و مشكلة العقل- الجسد. ينتقد مورافيا بعض المذاهب الأكثر تأثيراً في هذا الحقل. من الاختزالوية الجسدانية الى العقلانية: فالعقل لا يمكن إزالته و لا مماهاته بالجسد و لا تفسيره ككيان ميتافيزيقي. بل بالأحرى وفقاً للمؤلف, من المجدي أكثر أن ننظر الى العقل كمركب من التصرفات البراغماتية و اللغوية التي تعبر الكائنات البشرية عن نفسها من خلالها. إن معالجة الكتاب المفصلة و المنهجية لهذه القضية الفلسفية الاساسية تجعل منه مثالياً من أجل المناهج الجامعية و مناهج الدراسات العليا في الابستمولوجيا و فلسفة العقل. و يفترض به أن يبرهن على قراءة محرضة لعلماء النفس و علماء المعرفة.
