تدور أحداث رواية "لعبة الملاك" للكاتب الإسباني كارلوس زافون في برشلونة قبل عقدين من إندلاع الحرب الاهلية أي عشرينيات القرن العشرين وتوضح تفاصيل الظروف والإرهاصات التي أدت إلى إندلاع الحرب التي راح ضحيتها أكثر من نصف مليون شخص.
يتركز السرد حول حياة الكاتب الشاب "ديفيد مارتين" الشخصية المحورية التي تمسك بطرف الخيط السردي للرواية، ووسط هذه الاجواء المبلدة والمركبة واليائسة التي تجعله يظن أنه يمر بأسوأ فترات حياته، يتلقى عرضاً مغرياً يصعب رفضه... دعوة سرية ينجرف ورائها من دون أن يدري، ليجد نفسه متورطاً في متاهة لإفكاك منها.
ويدور في فلك مارتين / الكاتب عدد كبير من الشخصيات الفرعية مثل: عائلة بائعي الكتب "سامبيري" وشخصية "إيزابيل" قلب التاريخ النابض، وشخصية "كريستينا" مرآة مارتين الصادقة، و"بيدرو بيدال" مرشد البطل كي يسلك طريقه وسط الطبقة الراقية، وهو أيضاً روائي محب للفن والموسيقا، ولكنه شخص تعس كما يبدو في الرواية ينتظر الموت.
يرتكز كارلوس زافون إلى تاريخ إسبانيا المروع في القرن العشرين، ليكتب رواية صادمة بأسلوب حاد، ويجعل من إرث برشلونة إرثاً عالمياً، لن يستطيع القارئ، الذي أحب "ظل الريح" الرواية التي تصدرت قائمة أعلى الروايات مبيعاً لأربع سنوات متتالية، إلا أن يهيم في قراءة "لعبة الملاك" الرواية التي منحت كارلوس زافون لقب "ديكنز البرشلوني" بلا منازع.
