تنقلب حياة الشخصية "حياة" رأسا على عقب حين تصطحب أولادها إلى المدرسة، فيُفْرم ابنها الأصغر "أكرم" مع صديقه "وليد" بين شاحنتين. هذه الواقعة تفضح لها خبث السياسة ومكرها بعد أن تكتشف أنَّ ابن الجنرال "بومال عبد القادر" لم يحاسب على جرمه، لأنّه ذو مكانة مرموقة بينما يحاسب السائق الثاني لأنَّه ابن الشعب. تحاول هذه الأم استرداد حقها خصوصا بعد اعتراف وكيل الجمهورية بتزوير الحقائق، لكنّها تصطدم بالرأي الرافض لزوجها "مهدي" الذي اعتبر السعي وراء هذه القضية مجرد تضييع للوقت والأموال. أمام هذه الظروف تلجأ "حياة" إلى الكتابة التي ستكون إحدى أسباب ابتعادها عن مهدي وستكتشف أنّ مشكلتها كانت مع نفسها لأنّها ليست برجل ولكنّها كانت تعيش دوره، وأنّ انهيار كل شيء كان لترسبات أليمة اختزلتها ذاكرتها ففض الموت عنها الغبار وجعلها تتدفق على لسان حياة.
حياة ليست متزوجة ولم تعش هذه الحكاية بل هي رواية تخيلتها في إسطنبول وعادت بها مكتوبة إلى الجزائر لتكون منى أول من يتسلمها ويقرأها في حضورها.
