تغير الثعابين أثوابها كل صيف. أما (الآف)، ذلك الثعبان العجوز الذى أصابته الحكمة بعد هرم، فقد نبت له ريش على جسده، وظن أنه بهذا يستطيع الطيران، فلما حاول الطيران سقط فى بئر مهجورة، فبكى فاكتشف الدموعة، وكان هو اول ثعبان يبكى، وحدث أنه لما مست أولى دموعه تراب قاع البئر صارت لؤلؤاً، فيكى فتجمع اللؤلؤ وأصبح جوهرة صغيرة، فابتعلها الآف وقال هى علامة أتبعها وسكن البئر. وأصبح كل صيف يخرج لؤلؤته ويبكى فتزداد حجماً ويبلعها بانتهاء الصيف. وأتى صيف طويل بكى فيه كثيراً فزادت الجوهرة حجما غير قليل، فابتلعها بصعوبة.. فاختنق، ولم ينجده أحد فمات. واختفت الجوهرة. لذا، من يقتل الآف قبل أن تقتله الجوهرة، يفز بجوهرة الآف.
