يتحدث الباحثة في هذا الكتاب عن تدوين الملاحظات مؤكداً أنها ضرورة ملحة حتى لا ينسى الطالب مضمون المحاضرة أو اللقاء الذي يحضره، وبعد ذلك انتقاد آراء القائلين أن تدوين الملاحظات من شأنه أن يضعف الذاكرة ويؤدي بها إلى الخمول.
ومن ثم استعرض الباحث مساوئ النسيان وتشوه الذكريات وشروط التثبت السليم لما يراد تذكره، وبعد ذلك قام بتدوين الخلاصة التي توصل إليها والتي جاءت نتيجة تنظيمية لبحث ميداني صغير أجراه طلابه مع حوالي مائتي شخص، هدفه معرفة رأيهم بعملية تسجيل الملاحظات وأهمية هذا التسجيل على ذاكرتهم.
ومن خلال هذا الاستطلاع للرأي قام بتحديد المقصود بتسجيل الملاحظات بشكل عام وكما وقام باستعراض الحالات أو الأفعال التي يترتب عليها ملاحظات مهمة - يجب تدوينها وهنا قام المتحدث عن المقابلات أو اللقاءات، المحاضرات المهنية، القراءات - المطالعات ، الرحلات، المسرحيات والأفلام، ألبومات الصور، الأعمال العادية وال، الحسابات، الإلهامات والخواطر، كشف ساعات العمل...
وفي نهاية البحث قام الباحث بالرد على سؤال كيف تخدم الملاحظات المدونة في الحياة المدرسية، الحياة العملية فيما بعد.
