إدوارد بيدج ميتشل: كاتبُ قصصٍ ومحرِّرٌ أمريكي، وُلِد في عام ١٨٥٢، ويُعَد من الشخصيات الرئيسية في تطوُّر أدب الخيال العلمي. وُصِف لاحقًا بأنه «العملاق المفقود في أدب الخيال العلمي الأمريكي»؛ إذ كتب الكثيرَ من قصص الخيال العلمي في الفترة الممتدة من سبعينيات القرن التاسع عشر إلى تسعينياته، وجميعها تقريبًا نُشِرت في صحيفة «ذا صن» اليومية في نيويورك، دونَ الكشف عن هُويته.
ضمَّت كتاباته العديدَ من التنبُّؤات التكنولوجية والاجتماعية التي كانت جريئةً وسابقةً لعصرها، ومن بين ذلك التدفئة الكهربائية، وتجميد البشر مؤقتًا، وآلة السَّفَر عبر الزمن، والسَّفَر بسرعةٍ أكبر من سرعة الضوء، وحق الاقتراع للنساء الأمريكيات، والتزاوُج بين الأعراق. وتشتمل قصصُه الخيالية على كلِّ ما هو غامض وغريب، بما في ذلك الأشباح، والشيطان، والماسوشية، وتحوُّل الأجسام غير الحية إلى كائناتٍ حية، وغير ذلك كثير.

رجُلٌ من أهلِ المدينةِ يسيرُ في الغابةِ متوجِّهًا إلى أحدِ الجداولِ من أجلِ الصَّيْد، فتتعثَّرُ قدمُه في حفرةٍ عميقةٍ يسمعُ بعدَ ذلك عنها وعن سكَّانِها حكاياتٍ غريبة، فتغويه بالذَّهابِ إليها مرةً أُخْرى. يقتربُ من الحفرةِ فتَسحبُه إليها قوةٌ عَجِيبة، ويَجِدُ نفْسَه في عالَمٍ غريب؛ عالَمِ الاسبلرجلز. قوانينُ الطبيعةِ تَختلفُ في هذه الحفرة، وكذلك يَختلفُ سكَّانُها عن جيرانِهم الذين يعيشونَ فوقَهم على الأرض. في هذه القِصَّة، سنعيشُ معَ بطَلِها مغامرتَه المشوِّقةَ في هذا العالَمِ العجيب؛ عالَمِ الاسبلرجلز.
