من وحي برنامج "الأوائل والنوادر" في إذاعة الكويت والذي كان يعده مؤلف هذا الكتاب الأستاذ "مهنا حمد المهنا" جاءت فكرة إخراج كتاب "كناشة الأوائل والنوادر" في جزئه الأول، أما قصة هذا الكتاب فيسردها المؤلف بالقول: "وقد كنت في صغري ... أجعل لنفسي دفتراً أو كشكولاً أكتب فيه ما أستلذ من أخبار وفوائد، وأضيف إليه صور العلماء والمخترعين والرحّالة. وأشعر بلذة قلما يدانيها لذة عندما ارى وجوه أناس غيروا التاريخ وتركواآثارهم شاهدة على مآثرهم (...) وبعد أن تقدمت بي السنون وزاد اطلاعي على الكتب والعلم. كانت هناك ثلاثة أشياء جعلت مني أحرص على التقييد والكتابة وتخصيص كُنّاشات لذلك – الكُناّشة: بالضم والشد: الأصل الذي يتشعب منه الفروع – ثم أطلقت على كل دفتر يجمع أصول الفوائد والعظات.
أما عن مصادر كتابه فيذكر المؤلف: "التذكرة التيمورية" وهي الفوائد والنكات التي قيدها العلامة المرحوم أحمد تيمور باشا، وكتاب "كناشة النوادر" للعلامة المرحوم عبد السلام محمد هارون؛ بالإضافة إلى قراءته لكتب التراث العربي والإسلامي وما جاء فيها من النوادر والطرائف ...
وبالإستناد إلى ما تقدم يضم الكتاب (589) فائدة بين نادرة وطرفة ومعلومة مفيدة مع الإشارة إلى مصدرها، ومنها:
أول ما دَرَسَتِ الحقوق في العراق هي الآنسة صبيحة الشيخ داود.
أول من غنى الشعر العربي بالألحان الهندية عبد الله الفرج الدوسري الكويتي.
من الذين أوصوا بكتابة أبيات شعر على قبورهم: المعري في بيته المشهور (هذا ما جناه أبي). كما أوصى الزمخشري أن يُكتب على قبره: (يا من يرى من البعوض).
