"في هذه الرواية، سيفاجئك عالم جديد. عالم من الحياة في قرية هندية من قرى الجنوب الفقيرة، المنعزلة، في وقت فرضت فيه العزلة على القرية التمسك بتقاليد قديمة بالية ترجع لمئات، وربما آلاف السنين. يأخذنا المؤلف، إم. تي. فاسوديفان ناير، في رحلة مع بطله من القرية التي قضى فيها صباه وبواكير شبابه، إلى المدينة الصغيرة التي ذهب لقضاء دراسته الجامعية فيها، ثم إلى مدينة أكبر، حيث عمل وقضى معظم حياته العملية. وسيتو، بطل الرواية، شخصية تشبه أغلب شباب جيله، تربى في بيئة فقيرة في بيت أسرته، وقابلته العديد من العقبات والإحباطات التي سارت به من الآمال الكبيرة في حياة أفضل، إلى حياة أخرى ولكنها مليئة بالتعاسة. وقد رسم المؤلف شخصية سيتو ببراعة تامة، والحق أن معظم شخصيات هذه الرواية مرسومة بدقة تجعلك تشعر بأنك تعيش معها وتشعر بكل ما يدور في نفوسها. وفي النهاية سوف تسأل نفسك: هل كان سيتو شخصاً أنانياً خائناً لكل من أحبوه، أم أنه كان ضحية الظروف والإحباطات التي لاقاها في كل مرحلة من مراحل حياته؟"
