ساندور ماراي، كاتب وصحفي مجري، ولد في بداية القرن العشرين في عائلة بورجوازية ذات أصول نمساوية هنغارية، توفي في نيسان 1989. ولد ساندرو في 11 نيسان عام 1900 في مدينة كاسا في المجر (الآن كوشيتسه في سلوفاكيا). في سنواته الأولى، سافر إلى المراعي وعاش في فرانكفورت وبرلين، وباريس، وتعتبر فترة وجيزة التي مارس فيها الكتابة باللغة الألمانية، ولكنه اختار في نهاية المطاف لغة أمه، الهنغارية. استقر في بودابست، في عام 1928. وفي عام 1930 اكتسب شهرة واسعة باسلوبه الواقعي الدقيق وكان أول شخص أقدم على كتابة نقدية لأعمال كافكا.

عمل فني رائع آخر يُعاد اكتشافه لكاتب "جمرات". رواية حسية ومثيرة وحكيمة عن أشهر مغوي فاسد في العالم والمواجهة التي غيرته إلى الأبد. هرب جياكومو كازانوفا عام 1756 من سجن في البندقية قيل أنه لا سبيل للهروب منه. وعاود الظهور مرة أخرى في قرية إيطالية صغيرة تسمى بولزانو، حيث استقبل زائراً غير مرغوب فيه، إنه دوق بارما العجوز لكنه ما يزال مرعباً، هزم كازانوفا منذ سنوات في مبارزة على فتاة فاتنة تسمى فرانشيسكا، ولم يقتله بشرط ألا يراها مرة أخرى أبداً. والآن وقد تزوج الدوق فرانشيسكا، وأمسك بالصدفة برسالة غرامية منها إلى غريمه القديم، بوسعه أن يقتل كازانوفا على الفور، لكنه يعرض عليه إتفاقاً بدلاً من ذلك. إتفاق منطقي ومنحرف ولا سبيل لمقاومته.
محولاً حدثاً تاريخياً إلى استكشاف روائي مذهل لعناق الرغبة والموت، أثبت ساندور ماراي بكازانوفا في بولزانو إنه أحد الأصوات المميزة في القرن العشرين.
