إدوارد بيدج ميتشل: كاتبُ قصصٍ ومحرِّرٌ أمريكي، وُلِد في عام ١٨٥٢، ويُعَد من الشخصيات الرئيسية في تطوُّر أدب الخيال العلمي. وُصِف لاحقًا بأنه «العملاق المفقود في أدب الخيال العلمي الأمريكي»؛ إذ كتب الكثيرَ من قصص الخيال العلمي في الفترة الممتدة من سبعينيات القرن التاسع عشر إلى تسعينياته، وجميعها تقريبًا نُشِرت في صحيفة «ذا صن» اليومية في نيويورك، دونَ الكشف عن هُويته.
ضمَّت كتاباته العديدَ من التنبُّؤات التكنولوجية والاجتماعية التي كانت جريئةً وسابقةً لعصرها، ومن بين ذلك التدفئة الكهربائية، وتجميد البشر مؤقتًا، وآلة السَّفَر عبر الزمن، والسَّفَر بسرعةٍ أكبر من سرعة الضوء، وحق الاقتراع للنساء الأمريكيات، والتزاوُج بين الأعراق. وتشتمل قصصُه الخيالية على كلِّ ما هو غامض وغريب، بما في ذلك الأشباح، والشيطان، والماسوشية، وتحوُّل الأجسام غير الحية إلى كائناتٍ حية، وغير ذلك كثير.

يَذكُرُ السيدُ «جاكوب راوندز»، الأمينُ المساعِدُ في المتحَفِ البريطاني، في خِطابٍ خاصٍّ أرسلَهُ إلى أحدِ المُستشرِقِين بعضَ التَّفاصِيلِ المُثيرةِ بشأْنِ مَخْطوطةٍ قديمةٍ يَعُودُ تاريخُها إلى الحَضارةِ الآشُورِيَّة، وذُكِرَ فيها طُوفانُ نُوحٍ وتَفاصِيلُ عن رِحْلتِه على ظَهْرِ السَّفِينة؛ كيفَ سخِرَ قَومُه مِنه وتمرَّدُوا عليه، وكيفَ نَجا هو ومَن معَه مِن ذلكَ الطُّوفانِ العَظِيم، والأهوالُ التي عانَوْها. كذلكَ تحدَّثتِ المَخطوطةُ عن الدَّورِ الذي لَعبَه ولدَا النبيِّ نُوح، سامٌ وحام، في هذهِ الرِّحلة؛ وعن سَفِينةٍ أُخرى مُنافِسةٍ أبحرَتْ في الوقتِ نفسِه وفي الظُّروفِ نفسِها. هذهِ التفاصيلُ وغيرُها كثيرٌ سنتعرَّفُ عليها في قِصَّةِ «إدوارد بيدج ميتشل» المُثِيرةِ عن الطُّوفان.
