هاجرت جماعات من العرب، وبخاصة من سوريا ولبنان، في القرن التاسع عشر والقرن العشرين، إلى العالم الجديد، وأقاموا في كندا والولايات المتحدة وفي دول أمريكا الجنوبية، ومن بينها البرازيل والأرجنتين وشيلى وفنزويلا، ونقلوا اللغة العربية والأدب العربي إلى تلك المهاجر البعيدة، فأنشأ أولئك المهاجرون في تلك الديار النائية أدباء يعبرون به عن مشاعرهم، وعواطفهم، ويتحدثون فيه عن غربتهم وحنينهم إلى أوطانهم، ويصفون فيه البلاد التي أقاموا فيها، ومظاهر الحضارة السائدة في حياة الناس هناك، كما يصفون فيه حياتهم وما تعرضوا له من عناء وشقاء وتجارب مريرة منيرة، وكان أدبهم هذا هو الأدب المهجري، الذي أصبح مدرسة أدبية كبرى، بين مدارس الأدب الحديث ومذاهبه، وعنى به الأدباء والنقاد، وكتب حوله وحول أعلامه في النثر والقصة والمسرحية والشعر الكثير من البحوث والدراسات؛ وظهرت فيه مؤلفات عديدة نالت حظاً من الذيوع والشهرة...
وقد تناول الأدب المهجري الحياة في جميع مظاهرها ومشاهدها، ومن شتى جوانبها وتياراتها وفلسفاتها، كما تناول مختلف ألوان النشاط الأدبي: من قصة ومقالة ونقد ونثر وشعر ومسرحية ومن فلسفة وحكمة وتجارب، ومن تأملات وحنين وأنين، وأمل وألم، وغناء وبكاء.
وهذا الأدب حديث النشأة، ولد مع القرن العشرين، ونشأ وترعرع ونما وأزدهر، حتى بلغ ما بلغه اليوم من مكانة بين مدارس الأدب العربي المعاصر؛ ويجدر الإشارة إلى صعوبة دراسة الأدب المهجري على كثرة الدارسين له، والباحثين عنه، ومع ذلك بقى هذا الأدب مجالاً حيّاً للدراسة والبحث.
يتناول فصول هذا الكتاب الأدب المهجري، في نشأته، وتطوره، وفنونه، وأعلامه، بالبحث والدراسة والتحليل، حيث يسلك المؤلف في دراسته لآداب المهجريين منهجاً علمياً مستقلاً شاملاً.
