هذا كتاب في قصص الأنبياء الأطهار والمرسلين الأخيار، الذين اختصهم الله بالمعجزات والآيات الباهرات، وأقام بهم الدين الذي اصطفاه لهم؛ فيهدي بهم من الضلالة، وأنقذ بهم من الجهالة، وجعلهم أولاء على الهدى لمن استهداهم ممن قص في القرآن.
وقد نظر المصنف في الكتب المؤلفة في سير أنبياء الله الأطهار ورسله الأبرار، فوجد أن مؤلفيها يجمعون الحق والباطل، ويقرنون إلى الصواب الخطأ، لا يرجعون في تلك القصص إلى تحقيق يبيّن من خلاله الرائج عن الزائف، وجل ما يعتمدون عليه إسرائيليات وخرافات ما أنزل الله بها من سلطان، فأراد ابن كثير أن يكون كتابه هذا علماً يهتدي به إلى الصواب مع التنبيه على ما يكون في تلك السير أو الروايات من الخطأ.
إن أحسن القصص قصص الأنبياء، لما جعل الله تعالى فيها من مواعظ وعبر، وإن الاطلاع على سير الأنبياء وأخبارهم وما حفلت به من أحداث واشتملت عليه من أفعال دليلٌ للمسلمين ينهجونه ويستعينون به للوصول إلى الإيمان الكامل الذي هو سبيل النجاة والفوز في الآخرة. قال تعالى: (وكلاً نقص عليك من أبناء الرسل ما نثبت به فؤادك وجاءك في هذه الحق وموعظة وذكرى للمؤمنين)، وقال عز من قائل: (لقد كان في قصصهم عبرة لأولي الألباب).
