الحديث عن الذات أمر شديد الصعوبة ، لأن كل سوء يحدثنا به كاتب عن نفسه، نصدقه بكل حماس؛ وكل خير ينسبه لها لا نسلم به إلا ببرهان ، ونأسف دائما لأنه لم يع الحديث في هذا الشأن لغيره من الناس. فى هذه الذكريات ، لن أتحدث عن نفسى لابخير ولا بسوء؛ فلست أتحدث عن ذاتى، وإنما عن ذلك الطفل الذى لم أعده بعد ، هذا الشخص الصغير الذى عرفته وتلاشى مع الزمن ، كما تختفى عصافير الدورى التى لا تخلف وراءها هيكلا عظيما . فضلا عن كون هذا الطفل ليس موضوع هذا الكتاب ، وإنما هو الشاهد على أحداث دقيقة الصغر. مع ذلك فأنا الذى سأحرر ما يقوله نثرا . وهو أمر يخلو من الفطنة ، أعنى أن يغير المرء مهنته فى سن الستين
