لدى عودته إلى بيته بعد يوم من العمل، وجد فيرجيل على المجيب الآلي لهاتفه هذه الرسالة المحيّرة: تُبلغه كلارا بأنّها ستهجره. كان فيرجيل معتاداً على أن تهجره النساء، ولكن لم تكن لديه أيّ ذكرى عن هذه المرأة التي تُدعى كلارا. تفاجا وتساءل إن لم يكن مريضاً مرضاً خطيراً أو مصاباً بداء النسيان، أسرع إلى طبيبته النفسانية، طلب المشورة من صديقته آرميل... ولكن لكونه لم يجد تفسيراً مقنعاً، انتهى فيرجيل إلى اتّخاذ قرارٍ غير متوقّع: أن يستعيد هذه المرأة التي لا يعرفها...

قد تكون قصّة حب هي كوميديا رومانسية يُبرهن فيها مارتن باج عن موهبة نادرة في الدعابة والسخرية، ولكنها ليست رواية مضحكة فحسب، بل هي عميقة وممتعة تطرح التأمل في الحبّ والصداقة والالتزام الغرامي ومصادفات الحياة وصعوبة الكينونة والعزلة... إنّها مفاجأة جميلة.
