"ما زلت أذكر كرمة العنب التي تسلقت عليها طفولتنا، وتأرجحت مع عناقيدها الخضراء بفعل نسمات الصيف العابرة.
أما هو فكان يُسرع الخُطى بمحاذاة شريان طويل من الأسفلت المُصمت، تُهرول من فوقه السيارات بلا هوادة. يسير مطأطأ الرأس تارة و ناظراً أمامه أخرى. لا يلتفت لأحد ولا ينظر لشئ بعينه. عندما رأيناه لأول مرة توقفنا عن اللعب لبرهة، و لكن بعد ذلك تعودنا على تجاهله كما يفعل الأخرون.
تعجبت من أمي عندما حذرتي و أخوتي من الاقتراب أو الحديث معه.
- ""أهو مُصاب بمرض مُعدي؟"" سألتها
- ""لا"". أجابت في تردد ثم أردفت ""إنه مجنون""
ما كان يحيرني في الحقيقة، أنه لم يكن يشبه ساكني الشوارع وأسفل الكباري في شئ. أولئك الذين يُربكك منظرهم حين تراهم ممددين على الأرصفة العارية. فبمجرد أن يقع نظرك عليهم، تظن أن أمامك كومة من الثياب الرثة المُتسخة ولكن ما تلبث أن تتحرك تلك الكومة حتى تكتشف أنه مجرد انسان مشرد و شارد في الفراغ"
