وفي عشرة فصول يضمها الكتاب يعرض الكاتبان للعوامل التي ساهمت في بعث الروح في الفنون الحرة التي كادت أن تندرس كالنحو والشعر والبلاغة والرسم والبحث والعمارة والموسيقى والغناء. ويرى المؤلفان أن الأفكار الجديدة تستطيع أن تفرض نفسها بعد أن تواجه بأفكار أقوى معارضة ويخرجان بانطباع مفاده أن تاريخ الفنون في فلورنسا في الربع الأول من القرن الخامس عشر هو أن أسلوبين وليس أسلوباً واحداً، كانا يسعيان لإثبات وجودهما في مواجهة الأشكال التقليدية. ويبرزان بشكل واضح مدى تأثير العبادة المسيحية في فن عصر النهضة والذي يتمثل في الإيقونوغرافية الجديدة.
