الرواية تعالج الاختلافات الدينية والفكرية التى تشهدها مصر من خلال نماذج مختلفة لعائلات مصرية. وتعد «فخفخينا» شهادة واقعية لحياة تعيشها أغلب الأسر المصرية حين تجمع بين حوائطها الابن المتشدد دينيا، الحريص على الاستماع إلى شيوخ الدين المتشددين، بالإضافة إلى الأبناء فاقدى الأمل فى المستقبل بسبب تفشى الواسطة، وضعف التعليم، وانشغال الأهل عن زرع القيم الأخلاقية المهمة، وأبناء آخرين ذوى الفكر الوسطى، والذين يعانون بسبب طموحهم، وعدم قدرة المجتمع على تقبل فكرة تدينهم الوسطى، ومتابعة أعباء الحياة بوسطية.
تبدأ الرواية بعودة عائلة كامل الذى ابتعد عن مصر لمدة ٣٠ عاما فقد فيها زوجته وزوج ابنته، وقرر أن يعود لتعيش ابنته سمر وأحفاده، ويكمل ما تبقى له من أعوامه على أرض الوطن الذى ظل يحلم به ولا يفارق خياله، وبمجرد عودته إلى منزله، اكتشف أنه يرى مصر جديدة لا علاقة له بتلك الدولة التى تركها، فقد استقبلته ٣ شخصيات متنوعة، الفتاة المنتقبة، ثم الولد المتأمرك،
فالفتاة ذات المظهر الجاد، الأمر الذى جعل ابنته تقف متعجبة من التناقض الغريب فى أهل المنزل، حتى تكتشف أنهم ليسوا من أبناء العمارة فقط، بل إنهم أبناء أسرة واحدة، لصديق والدها سعيد، ومن خلال توطيد العلاقات مع الأسرة تسعى لاستكشاف ما بداخل كل واحد منهم، كى يجدوا طريق النجاح ويعيشوا الحياة الحقيقية التى يجهلونها.
