تتحدث الرواية عن رابط غريب اكتشفته الكاتبة يجمع بين قصة أهل القرية في سورة يس وبين قصة المدينتين التين دفنهما بركان فيزوفيس تحت الرماد، بومبي وهركيولانيم.
وتتنقل أحداث الرواية بين غزة ومعاناتها وحصارها بعد حرب العصف المأكول عام ٢٠١٤ ميلادية وبين الدولة الرومانية والأحداث التي مرت عليها في القرن الأول الميلادي، بدءا من ارتحال رسل المسيحية لنشر الدعوة الإلهية في أوروبا، حتى انفجار بركان فيزوفيس ٢٥ أغسطس ٧٩ ميلادية.
وتشرح الكاتبة من خلال سرد الأحداث والانتقال بين القصتين الرابط التاريخي واللغوي والرياضي بالاعتماد على حساب الجمّل، الحساب العربي القديم، لتصل في النهاية إلى اليقين بأن الأمة بكاملها ترقد في سبات تحت طبقات من الركام تماما كما كانت بومبي مغطاة بالرماد لسبعة عشر قرناً.
