تبدأ القصة عندما يستيقظ "ريان كارتر" في مكان مجهول وسط ظلام دامس، ليكتشف أنه لم يعد في جسده البشري المعتاد، بل أصبح كيانًا ذا جسد صناعي بملامح آلية. مع شعور غريب يجتاحه، يحاول فهم ما حدث له، لكنه يجد نفسه محاصرًا في منشأة مجهولة، ويقابله رجل غامض يُدعى "كاين"، الذي يطرح عليه سؤالًا مثيرًا: "كيف عدت إلى الحياة؟"
خلال رحلته، يهرب ريان من المنشأة باستخدام مهارات لم يكن يعلم أنه يمتلكها، ليجد نفسه في مدينة ضخمة تدعى "نيو كايروس"، حيث يكتشف أن جسده يحمل شفرة رقمية يمكن أن تغيّر مصير النظام المسيطر على المدينة. خلال هروبه، يلتقي بـ "سيرا"، هاكر متمرّسة تخبره أنه يحمل سرًا خطيرًا يمكنه تدمير أو السيطرة على "النظام الأعظم"، وهو شبكة ذكاء اصطناعي تتحكم في المدينة بأكملها.
تتطور القصة إلى مطاردة شرسة بين ريان وقوات الأمن التي تسعى للقبض عليه، بينما يحاول استعادة ذاكرته المفقودة. بمساعدة سيرا، يكتشف أن هناك فتاة تُدعى "ليليث" كانت جزءًا من التجربة نفسها، وهي الوحيدة التي قد تساعده على كشف الحقيقة. ومع تقدم الأحداث، يكتشف أن هناك من يحاول استغلال قوته لمآرب خفية، ويجد نفسه وسط صراع بين الحرية والسيطرة المطلقة على البيانات والمعلومات.
