يذهب "أوين" إلى ضيعة يقيم فيها الغجر ليسترد النقود التي استولت عليها امرأتان غجريتان من عمته عندما باعتا لها ماء الصنبور على أنه ماء مقدس. يفاجأ الشاب بمجموعة من الرجال مفتولة العضلات يمسكون به ويلفون حبلاً حول رقبته ويعلقون طرف الحبل الآخر في فرع شجرة بينما يضعونه فوق سيارة. كان "أوين" في حالة ذهول تام لا يصدق ما حدث له عندما سارعت فتاة غجرية فوق جواد لتأمر الرجال أن يحلوا الحبل في الحال عن "أوين". وعندما تعرف اسمه بالكامل تصاب بالهلع؛ لأنه الوريث الوحيد-هو وعمته العجوز-لإمبراطورية من الأراضي والمباني وبنك الائتمان في المدينة، وأن الضيعة التي يقيمون بها مرهونة للبنك الذي يمتلكه. كما أنها عانت الأمرين حتى أحضرت عشيرتها من الغجر من "روسيا" لتستقر في أمريكا. كما أن الغجرية الحسناء كانت تعمل مغنية مرشحة للعالمية، وتغني بست لغات مختلفة وأن ما فعله رجال العشرية يهدد كل ما بذلته من جهد.
يقع "أوين" في حب الغجرية الحسناء التي تبادله نفس الحب، ولكن هناك مشاكل عديدة تقف حائلاً بينهما.
