نظرية الجشطلت ” هي في نفس الوقت نظرية فلسفة و تيار في علم النفس ” . فهي من ناحية تدخل مفهومي الصيغة والبنية في تفسير العالم الفيزيائي كما تدخلهما في تفسير العالم البيولوجي والعالم العقلي إنها تقيم صلات القرابى ما بين الوقائع التي تعتبرها التصورات التقليدية منعزلة عن بعضها البعض , وتقيم على هذه الصلات فلسفة وحدانية للطبيعة وهي من ناحية اخرى تطبق نفس هذه المفاهيم , في الميدان الخاص بعلم النفس , على مشكلات محددة ودقيقة لتبين صحة فروضها المتسمة بأعظم الجسارة .
ومن هنا فإن فكرتنا عن هذه النظرية تكون أمعن ما يمكن في الخطأ – وهذا الخطأ قد تم الوقوع فيه أحيانا – إن نحن رأينا فيها مجرد تأمل فلسفي وإن نحن اعتقدنا أن أهميتها تقتصر عن طريق استخدام مصطلحات جديدة , على إبراز بعض أوجه الشبه الجد عامة ما بين فئات مختلفة من الوقائع وكما نبلغ إلى فهم هذه النظرية وإلى الحكم عليها , يتحتم علينا – في الحدود التي بفرضها حجم هذا الكتاب – أن نتبع المفكرين إلى معاملهم وأن نشهد بعض من تجاربهم , وعلى أية حال فكائنا من كان مصير هذه النظرية فإن الواقع الجديد التي تكشف عنها ستظل باقية وستظل الأفكار التجريبية محتفظة بقيمتها وأهمية الدور الذي تؤديه أية نظرية لا يأتي فحسب من المعقولية التي نسبغها من الوقائع المعروفة , وإنما على الأخص مما لها من قيمة كشفية ومن خصوبة قي البحث .
