يعد المناخ من أهم عناصر الطبيعة، لما له من تأثير على مكوناتها كافة، من: أشكال سطح الأرض، والمياه، والنبات، والحيوان، والإنسان الذي يعيش أحداث الجو يوماً بيوم وسنة بسنة بإنعكاسات تلك الأحداث على حياته وأنشطته المختلفة.
وفي هذا الصدد، لا بد من تحديد مفهومي الطقس والمناخ، فالطقس (Weather) يمثل: حالة الجو في مكان ما خلال فترة زمنية قصيرة قد تكون يوماً أو جزء من يوم.
بينما يعبر المناخ (Climate) عن الحالة المتوسطة للأحوال الجوية في مكان ما خلال فترة زمنية طويلة (30- 35 سنة)، ذلك أن المناخ في أي منطقة هو مركب لطقوس متعددة متعاقبة ومتمازجة مع البعض خلال فترة طويلة من الزمن، تكفي لأن تتردد خلالها أشكال الطقوس كافة - المنتظمة وغير المنتظمة - ولقد اعتمدت المنظمة العالمية للأرصاد الجوية (WMO) فترة (30) سنة ممثلة للمناخ.
ويعبر كل من الطقس والمناخ عن حالة جوية وهذه الحالة هي مركب جوي، من نتاج التفاعل بين عدة عناصر، وتتمثل هذه العناصر (عناصر الطقس والمناخ) في كل من: درجة الحرارة، الضغط الجوي، الرياح، الرطوبة الجوية، التكاثف ومظاهره والتهطال وأشكاله... وغير ذلك من الحالات والظواهر والمظاهر الجوية، ويتحكم في عناصر المناخ وتغيراتها زمانياً ومكانياً مجموعة من القوى - تدعى بالعوامل المناخية - متمثلة في درجة العرض، وتوزع اليابسة والماء، والإرتفاع، والحواجز الجبلية، والتيارات المحيطية، والنبات والتربة والإنسان.
ويهتم علم المناخ التحليلي بدراسة تحليلية تفصيلية لعناصر المناخ كافة، التي من تفاعلها مع بعضها البعض في مكان محدد تتحدد خصائصه المناخية التي هي من مجالات علم المناخ الإقليمي.
