يسرنى أن أقدم للقارئ العزيز كتاب الجبرتى المعروف باسم: "عجائب الآثار فى التراجم والأخبار"، وقد حققه الأستاذ الدكتور عبدالرحيم عبدالرحمن عبدالرحيم، أستاذ التاريخ الحديث بجامعة الأزهر، والمتخصص الكبير فى العصر العثمانى.
ويعد كتاب "عجائب الآثار فى التراجم والأخبار" من أكبر أعمال الجبرتى وأعظمها شأناً، واستحق ما وصفه به الأستاذ مكدونالد فى دائرة المعارف الإسلامية: "بأنه أعظم تواريخ مصر فى القرنين الثانى عشر والثالث عشر الهجريين" أى القرن الثامن عشر واوائل القرن التاسع عشر.
ويكاد هذا الكتاب ينفرد بالعناية بتاريخ الحياة الاجتماعية فى مصر، الأمر الذى جعل لتاريخه أهمية خاصة، فقد ذكرت دائرة المعارف الإسلامية أن هذا التاريخ قد صور تفصيلا حياة الشرقيين، واستفاد منه "لين" وهو يعلق على الطبعة التى أخرجها من ألف ليلة وليلة.
وكانت للجبرتى ملاحظاته القوية لما يطرأ على الحياة الاجتماعية فى مصر من تغيير، ومن هذه الملاحظات نشأة المسرح والتمثيل لأول مرة، ويصف الجبرتى هذه الظاهرة فيقول عن هذا المكان يؤمه الناس؛ ليشاهدوا "ملاعب جماعة منهم، بقصد التسلى والملاهى".
وقد استطاع الجبرتى أن يصور أصدق تصوير أنواع المظالم التى عاناها الشعب المصرى خلال القرنين السابع عشر والثامن عشر من الحاكم المستبد الجاهل، وموقف المصريين ومقاومتهم لهؤلاء الحكام البغاة، وكيف كان شيوخ الأزهر وسطاء لوقف طغيان المماليك، وكيف كان الأزهر يحتل مكانة مرموقة فى الحياة المصرية.
