جايتو جازدانوف في يوم صيفي شديد الحرارة، أثناء الحرب الأهلية الروسية، يطلق الراوي النار على جندى فيقتله، ويهرب على صهوة جواد ذلك الجندي. بعد تلك الحادثة بسنوات عديدة، وقد أصبح الراوى يعيش فى باريس، يعثر على كتاب لمؤلف يدعى “ألكسندر ولف”، ويقرأ فيه سردا للحادثة نفسها بأدق تفاصيلها، لكن من وجهة نظر الضحية. بدءا من تلك اللحظة، يحاول الراوى الوصول إلى الكاتب الغامض بجميع الطرق، فيلتقى عدة شخصيات غريبة تؤثر على مجرى حياته، وتغير كل مسلماته عن الحياة والموت وتداخلهما. رواية مذهلة عن حتمية القدر وتأثيره على طبيعة الإنسان وعلاقاته بالآخرين. رواية رائعة، عميقة كمأساة إغريقية، ولاهثة كقصة بوليسية.
يعد جايتو جازدانوف (سانت بطرسبورج 1903 – ميونيخ 1971) من أهم الكتاب الروس فى المهجر فى بدايات القرن العشرين. عاش فى باريس بدءا من 1923، وكتب المقالات الصحفية والأدبية، وأصدر عددا من الروايات والقصص المتأثرة بالفلسفة الوجودية. أهملت أعماله بعد وفاته، وأعيد اكتشافها فى تسعينيات القرن الماضى، فتربعت على قوائم الكتب الأكثر مبيعا فى بلدان أوروبية عديدة.
