إحدى العلامات البارزة في الأدب المصري في الثلاثين عاما الأخيرة.
ولد بقرية البندرة قرب طنطا.
انتقل في منتصف الخمسينات إلى القاهرة وبدأ الكتابة الأدبية في منتصف الستينات حينما سجن لمدة أربع سنوات لانتمائه لتنظيم يساري.
عاش في المنفى ببرلين من عام ١٩74 إلى عام ١٩٨5 لاختلافه مع النظام ثم رجع إلى القاهرة حيث توفي عام ١٩٩٠.
له خمس روايات، وأربع روايات قصيرة، وخمس مجموعات قصصية ومسرحية.

رواية طرف من خبر الآخرة تأليف عبد الحكيم قاسم، عبد الحكيم قاسم ولغته شديدة السحر والتمكن، قمة الإبداع والإبهار اللغوي في هذه الرواية، تجسيد قوي لمبدأ السهل الممتنع، كثير من الأفكار في قليل من الكلمات، عمل ممتع للمبدع الراحل. لغة الرواية شاعرية جدا جدا وتختار موضوع روحاني ومحير جدا، تتحدث الرواية عن الموت في الشكل العام ولكن عن الحياة بشكل خاص، الحياة والموت. تحكي فصول حياة وموت شخص ما وفصول حسابه أو وصوله للمعرفة النهائية وتخليه عن ما يعيب الحياة البشرية من رضوخ للضغائن والحب والكره والغضب.
في المقابل قصة شخص يدعي الحفيد وحياته التى وهبه للعلم ليس العلم بالمعني المجرد بل المعرفة القصوى من الحياة الرغبة في المعرفة والوصول إليها. يقرأ من كتب جده الذي لا يتكلم ولا يتحرك يقرأ في ورق ما شجرة العائلة وجده المؤسس ويسرد أسماء أشخاص ماتوا ويتذكر أشخاصا في طريقهم للتسجيل في الورق بعدما يموتوا. يذهب للأزهر لتلقي العلم لكنه يفشل في الحفظ بالطريقة التعليمية فهو لا يعرف ما علاقة 4 بجمع العدد اثنين واثنين فيقول إنه العدد أربعة مختلف عنهم يسرد آيات الذكر الحكيم على حسب نزولها وليس على حسب تتريبها في المصحف فيقول الرسول لم يقرأ المصحف، المصحف جمعه التابعين
