لقد وصلت إلى ميناء الإسكندرية سفينة محملة بالعبيد والِأياء الثمينة، من بين كل هذا كانت هناك الفتاة الجميلة تاليا ابنة احد الفلاسفة من آسيا الصغرى، والتي اشتراها الطبيب اليوناني لبتسينوس لكي تساعده في عيادته، هذا الطبيب كان يلعب دورًا مزدوجًا وخطيرًا، فهو يبدي ولاءه وإخلاصه لقاضي القضاة الروماني تريمالخيو، وفي الوقت نفسه فهو صديق لعدوته اللدود أفرانيا، بينما اندمج لبتسينوس في لعب هذا الدور المزدوج، راحت تاليا تقرأ ما كتبه وألفه الطبيب الكبير سورانوس من بلدة إفسيوس، وبهذا استطاعت أن تصبح طبيبة، وكذلك متخصصة في أمراض النساء، ولكن الأمور بالنسبة لتاليا لم تسر كما كانت تحب، إذ حدث أن قتل أحد المصارعين الفينيقيين وراحت الشائعات تتحدث عن اسمها كطرف في هذه الجريمة، وكادت هذه الشائعات تقضي عليها وعلى بقية سكان المدينة، في هذا الخضم المتلاطم من الأحداث يتبادر إلى الذهن سؤال مهم، ما الدور الذي لعبته أفرانيا في هذه الجريمة؟ لماذا امتدت يد تريمالخيو لحماية تاليا؟ ولماذا قرر لبتسينوس السفر إلى روما بصورة فجائية؟ وعندما أرادت تاليا أن تميط اللئام عن كل هذه الألغاز، يظهر الطبيب الكبير سورانوس الذي تعلمت من كتبه ويمنحها الفرصة التي تغير بها مجرى حياتها.
