إن هذا الكتاب الذي نضعه بين أيدي القراء والباحثين، والموسوم بطبقات الرواة، ليس مجرد سرد لأسماء أو تجميع لتراجم، بل هو دراسة منهجية مقارنة تهدف إلى فك الرموز المتعلقة بالتقسيم الزمني للرواة. وقد ركزنا في هذا العمل على إبراز التباين المنهجي بين الرؤية الكلاسيكية التي قدمها الحافظ ابن حجر العسقلاني في كتابه العظيم، وبين الرؤى الحديثة والمعاصرة التي حاولت تقنين هذا العلم ووضعه في قالب رياضي وتجديدي.
لقد تناول الكتاب بالتفصيل الفوارق الجوهرية في تقسيم الطبقات، فبينما اعتمد المنهج الكلاسيكي على معايير دقيقة تشمل اللقاء بالشيوخ والسن وتحليل البيانات الشخصية والبيوغرافية للرواة، مقسما إياهم إلى اثنتي عشرة طبقة تماشيا مع واقع الأجيال الأربعة الأولى، جاءت المناهج الحديثة لتقدم رؤية قائمة على الحسابات الرياضية والتبويب الجدولي، حيث اعتمدت ست عشرة طبقة كإطار ثابت يعتمد على سنوات الولادة والوفاة كمعيار أساسي للبحث والتحليل.
