مؤلف هذا الكتاب هو محمد بن مرتضى بن محمود المدعو بـ"محسن" المشتهر بـ"الغيض الكاشاني"، أحد نوابغ العلم في القرن الحادي عشر، كان عالماً حكيماً فقيهاً محدّثاً شاعراً أديباً زاهداً كريماً جامعاً بين مرتبتي العلم والعمل، وكان له في مراتب المعرفة والأخلاق، وتطبيق الظواهر بالبواطن بحسن المذاق طول باع ورحابة صدر. ولد في بلدة "كاشان" سنة (1007) بعد الهجرة النبوية، وكان نشوؤه في مدينة "قم" المشرفة، وكان في بداية تحصيله من تلامذة أبيه، ثم سافر إلى مدينة "شيراز" وأخذ العلوم الشرعية عن المحقق ماجد البحراني-أحد أكابر الفقه-وقرأ العلوم العقلية على الحكيم صدر الدين الشيرازي. ثم بعد تكميل العلوم توطن بكاشان، وكان هناك مرجعاً فذاً إلى أن تجاوز عمره حدود الثمانين، وتوفي بها في سنة (1091) وهو ابن أربع وثمانين، بعد أن ترك خلفه تراث كبير من المصنفات الهامة والقيمة، وكتابه ضياء القلب، هو واحد من سلسلة الكتب التي أصدرها وفيها يشبه المصنف النفس الإنسانية بمدينة إدّعوا الحكومة والسلطة عليها حكّام خمسة، وأرادوا التسخير والتسلط على هذه المدينة، والتصرف فيها ما يشاؤون فوقع التنازع بينهم، ومن أجل ذلك صارت مدينة النفس الإنسانية مضطربة غير مطمئنة لا يحصل لها قرار واطمئنان، ثم باحث عن مقتضيات كل من الحكّام بعد غلبته على الحكام الآخر، أنه إذ أرادت النفس نيل كمالها والوصول إلى سعادتها والسفر إلى ديار الحقائق لا بدّ أن تختار حاكماً عدلاً أميناً هادياً وهو "العقل" و"الشرع"، وإن اختارت البواقي ورجحت عليهما تخط من درجتها إلى أسفل السافلين.
