كتاب ضو البيت تأليف الطيب الصالح رواية واقعية تروى أحداث مليئ بالإثارة و التشويق: سرت وراء الصوت في جوف الظلام وأنا لا أدري هل أنا أسير إلى وراء أم إلى أمام. كانت قدماء تغوصان في الرمل، ثم أحسست كأنني أسير في الهواء، سابحاً دون مشقة، والأعوام تنحسر عن كاهلي، كما يتخفف المرء من ثيابه. ارتفعت أمامي قلعة ذات قباب عالية، يتوهج الضوء من نوافذها.. ارتفعت كجزيرة سابحة في لجة. وصلت الباب يحدوني الصوت، فإذا حراس تمنطقوا بالخناجر، فتحوا الباب، كأنهم ينتظرون مقدمي، وسرت وراء الصوت في دهليز طويل، ذي أبواب، على كل باب حرس، حق انتهينا إلى قاعة واسعة مضاءة بآلاف القناديل والمصابيح والشموع.. وكان في صدر القاعة، قبالة الباب، منصة مرتفعة، عليها عرش، كرسي عن يمين وكرسي عن شمال وعلى الجانبين وقف أناس طأطأوا رؤوسهم.. كان المكان صامتاً، لا كما تنعدم الضجة. ولكن كأن النطق لم يخلق بعد.
تبعت الصوت حتى وجدت نفسي مائلاً أمام الجالس على العرش. وجه ناعم السواد مثل المخمل، وعينان زرقاوان تلمعان بمكر كوني.. خيل إلي أنني رأيت ذلك الوجه من قبل، في عصر من العصور. وقال الصوت "أهلاً وسهلاً بابننا محيميد" الصوت ذاته الذي ناداني من قبل، وجاء يحدوني إلى هنا، صوت جدي لا مراء في ذلك، والوجه وجه بندر شاه، يا للعجب. ومرت بي لحظة إدراك سريعة، عابرة، عرفت فيها كل شيء، كأنني في تلك اللحظة فهمت سر الحياة والكون. ولكنها ضاعت كما جاءت، ولم أعد اذكر شيئاً. ما عدت اذكر ألا الاسم السحري، بندر شاه, ونظرت فإذا الجالس عن يمينه نسخة أخرى منه، كأنه هو، وفهمت
