في غالب الأوقات والمراحل التاريخية تشهد المجتمعات قيام تباين فكريين وثقافيين نقيضين، وغالباً ما يأخذ هذا التناقض شكلاً صراعياً. إذ يمثل أحد الطرفين القديم والآخر الجديد أو التراثي والحداثي فينبثق من جراء هذا الصراع تيار ثالث تسووي النزعة بتبني بعضاً من آراء كلا الطرفين تحت شعار خير الأمور أوسطها لكن هذا التيار التوثيقي الذي يقتات على افكار الطرفين النقيضين ويعتاش على صراعهما يبقى بلا لون ولا طعم ولا يمكنه أن يؤسس لجديد بل تقتصر غايته على إبقاء الأمور على حالها مع تلوينات شكلانية في ظاهر الطروحات.
إن من أسوأ ما يصيب المجتمعات من بلية هو سيطرة هذا التيار التوفيقي على مظاهر الحياة الإجتماعية والثقافية والسياسية حيث تقتل اي إمكانية للتقدم إذ من دمن الصراع الفكري والثقافي تنعدم فرص المجتمعات في التطور.
في هذا الكتاب اول محمد كامل الخطيب توضيح رأيه المضاد للتوفيقية السائدة اليوم في الساحة الثقافية العربية مستشهداً بآراء العديد من كبار أعلام عصر النهضة والمفكرين المعاصرين.
