تدور رواية صيف بارد جدا حول أم وابنها يبحثان عن ورق حائط لمنزلهما بسعر رخيص، صورة قد تراها في أي مكان في العالم، فما هو الجديد؟، الرواية تصور حياة أسرة نرويجية، أم وابنها، فيها من ألوان السرور وصنوف الشقاء ما تمر به أي أسرة أينما كانت، وإن اختلفت المقادير، غير أن الجديد في هذه الرواية أن الراوي ليس إلا طفلاً صغيراً، وهو يرى العالم بصورته الخاصة، بعيني طفل وعقل المحلل، ويدرك أكثر مما تظن أمه أنه يدرك، سيأسرك هذا الراوي الصغير بعينين يقظتين وحساسية مرهفة وتحليل منطقي أكثر مما تتوقع، ويأخذك إلى مواطن لم تكن لتظن أن طفلاً في الخامسة قد ينتبه لها، أو يحللها هذا التحليل. في يوم من الأيام تأتي فتاة صغيرة بحقيبتها الزرقاء لتعيش معهم، وحينها حياتهم تنقلب رأساً على عقب، حين يحكي عن عالمه نستشعر كأنه العالم بأسره منعكساً في عيني الصغير، ولعلك تذهل إذ ترى كيف أنك مع تعاقب الفصول تزداد انجذاباً للقصة كما لو أنها تحدث في المنزل المجاور لك وليس في النرويج، بل ربما أقرب من ذلك، وسنتعرف أكثر على النرويج وعلى الطبيعة البشرية.
