فتح سامي باب السيّارة وأغلقها بهدوء تام، أخرج الفأس والمجرفة وخطا خطوات ثابتة. نظر نظرة ثاقبة يمينا ويسارا قبل أن يقفز إلى داخل المقبرة عبر بابها الحديدي، ثم سار وسط المقابر مسلّطا الكشّاف وهو يبحث...
بدأ سامي يحفر بكلّ ما أوتي من قوّة، متمنّيا في قرارة نفسه أن ينتهي من هذا الأمر بسرعة، والخوف يتسرّب إلى قلبه شيئا فشيئا من أن يمسك به وهو متلبّس بجريمة لا تغتفر، فمرّة يستعمل الفأس ومرّة أخرى يستعين بالمجرفة لإزالة التربة، وظل على ذلك النحو لعدّة دقائق حتّى شعر بالتّعب والإرهاق، والعرق يتصبّب من جبينه، ولم يتوقّف عن الحفر إلى غاية أن ظهر الكفن مع تصاعد رائحة الموت الطّازجة التي خنقت أنفاسه، فشعر بنبض قلبه يكاد أن يخرج من صدره من شدّة الخوف والتّعب، لكن ذلك لم يوقفه على الاستمرار...
