تدور الرواية حول "كريمة"، صحفية شابة في مراكش، تحصل على وظيفتها الأولى في جريدة متعثرة، وتُكلف بمهمة شبه مستحيلة: إيجاد قصة إنسانية تهز الرأي العام لإنقاذ الجريدة.
تقودها مهمتها إلى "الحاجة كلثوم"، وهي سيدة عجوز في دار للمسنين، اختارت الصمت لسنوات. تنجح كريمة في كسب ثقتها، فتروي لها كلثوم قصتها المأساوية عن كيف تحول حبها المفرط لابنها "سعيد" إلى دمار، وكيف أدى إدمانه إلى عنفه عليها وهروبها إلى الدار.
تصطدم كريمة بحقيقة أن قصة كلثوم هي نسخة طبق الأصل من قصة والدتها ومعاناتها مع والدها المدمن. بعد صراع أخلاقي عميق، تقرر كريمة نشر القصة كـ "درس" للمجتمع. يحقق المقال نجاحاً باهراً، لكنها تكتشف أن كلثوم قد توفيت صباح يوم النشر. تنتهي القصة بلقاء مؤثر بين كريمة والابن "سعيد" عند قبر والدته، بعد أن قادته قراءة المقال هو أيضاً إلى هناك.
