جون رونالد رويل تولكين (3 يناير 1892 - 2 سبتمبر 1973) فيلولوجي إنكليزي وكاتب روائي وأستاذ جامعي عرف بشكل خاص في سلسلته الملحمية المدعوة "سيد الخواتم" ورواية "الهوبيت" إضافة لأعمال أخرى.
عمل أستاذا في جامعة أكسفورد لمادة اللغة الأنجلوساكسونية (1925 - 1945) ثم أستاذاً للغة الإنجليزية وآدابها (1945 إلى 1959).
كان مقربا من كلايف لويس بمشاركتهما في مجموعة نقاش حول الأدب اللاشكلي عرفت باسم إنكلنغ (بالإنجليزية: Inklings) وقد منحت الملكة إليزابيث الثانية تولكين وسام الإمبراطورية البريطانية من رتبة قائد في 28 مارس 1972.

الجزء الثالث من ملحمة جيه آر. أر. تولكين الرائعة "سيد الخواتم" دخل أفراد رفقة الخاتم في مغامرات منفصلة أثناء إنجاز المهمة وسيرها في طريق التنفيذ. أما أراجورن الذي كشف أنه الوريث الخفي لملوك الغرب القدامى فقد انضم إلى خيالة روهان ضد قوى آيزنجارد، واشترك في نصر هورنبرج الذي تحقق بكل صعوبة وبأس. أما ميري وبيبين وكانا قد تعرضا للاختطاف من جانب الأوركيين فقد هربا إلى غابة فانجورن وهناك قابلا الإنتيين.
وعاد جندلف فيما يشبه المعجزة وهزم الساحر الشرير- سارومان. وفي نفس الوقت فإن سام وفرودو يتقدمان باتجاه موردو لتدمير الخاتم وبرفقتهما سميجول- جولام، وهو لا يزال مهووساً بـ "شيئه الثمين". وبعد معركة مع أنثى العنكبوت العملاق- شيلوب- ترك سام سيده ظناً منه أنه مات، ولكن فرودو كان لا يزال على قيد الحياة في أيدي الأوركيين. وكانت جيوش سيد الظلام تتجمع باستمرار.
