يشكل سقراط علامة فارقة في تاريخ الفكر الفلسفي، فهو على مستوى الفلسفة اليونانية يؤرخ به: قبله وبعده. وهو على مستوى الفكر العالمي أحد أكبر الحكماء القدماء الذين لم يتركوا آثاراً مكتوبة تعرفنا بهم، ومع ذلك يبقى لغزاً محيراً لا ندري إن كنا نعرف عنه القليل أو الكثير. وهو إذ صرف النظر، لأسباب، عن مباحث الكون والعلم الطبيعي، واعتور مذهبه، من هذه الناحية، بعض القصور، فإنه كان غرس في نفوس تلاميذه ومريديه التأمل في معنى الحياة، وقدم منحى في التفكير له صفة الفرادة، نعني به، تجربته الشخصية ومنهجه التوليدي.
أخذ على عاتقه تعليم الناس الفضيلة ومعرفة الخير، مكرساً نفسه لذلك، قولاً وممارسة. كان ينتقد اعتقادات العامة ولكنه لم يعتزل الناس.
في منهجه التوليدي، كان سقراط أثار روح التفلسف، فدفع بالفلسفة دفعة رائدة، إلى حد أن المذاهب الفلسفية اتجهت بعده إلى نفس الطريق التي بدأها في العديد من القضايا التي تشغل الإنسان وما تزال، وأصبحت مسائل المعرفة، أي معرفة، هي الانطلاق من الإقرار بالجهل بالمعرفة. وطالما هو يقر بذلك ترسم الخطوة الأولى على الطريق الطويل، من مبدأ الإقرار هذا تتشكل معالم تحرك المتناقض: جهل -معرفة، تصير "اللا" أعرف نقطة بداية لـ"نعم" روح التفلسف، ونقيضها: ادعاء المعرفة جهل لا عماية بعده. أما أهمية سقراط، فتتوزعها شهرة تلاميذه وخصوصاً أفلاطون. ينتشرون عبر آثارهم المكتوبة، ولذلك يحضرون. وهو يكفيه لمح الطفرة ووهج البدايات. يكفيه حضور وامتداد وتمثل على أيدي تلاميذه وأبرزهم أفلاطون. أما سقراط وإن بقي لغزاً محيراً في حياته والموت، فإنما بهده "اللغزية"، إذا جاز القول، كان نظير حياة. أما سقراط فلن يكون نافلاً، ولا هو كذلك، وأهميته، تزداد وطأة حين نعرف أن المسائل التي تناولها -ووصلتنا عبر تلاميذه- كانت أقلقت الفكر وما تزال تمعن في الإقلاق، وفي ذلك سمة إبداع وخلود.
في هذا الكتاب، حيث الصرامة العلمية لم تتناف مع حيوية النص أو وضوحه، كشف عما كان هذا السقراط في الحقيقة.
