نشأت على مرّ الزمان طائفة من الرّحالين جعلوا مقصدهم وصف أسفارهم، وتسجيل تجاربهم في كتب يجد قارئها من الأخبار المتصلة، والأوصاف المتتابعة، والتدقيق في تسجيل تجاربهم في كتب يجد قارئها من الأخبار المتصلة والأوصاف المتتابعة، والتدقيق في تسجيل الحوادث والمشاهد ما لا يجده في كتب التاريخ والسير التي تعني أول ما تعني بالحوادث مشهودة ومروية، ويأتي خلالها وصف البلاد وأهلها تبعاً، وعرفت في العالم الإسلامي الكتب التي سمّيت الرحلات، وهي في جملتها وصف إنسان لأسفاره وما شهد فيها من أرض وبلاد وأمم ودول وملوك وعلماء وعادات وأخلاق.
ومن أقدم هذه الرحلات المعروفة في رحلة الشاعر الفارسي المتفلسف ناصر خسرو؛ وهي رحلة يتحدث عنها هذا الكتاب، وهي رحلة تقع حوادثها بين سنة 437 وسنة 444هـ، يجول صاحبها في بلاد إيران مبتدئاً من مرو في خراسان ماراً بأذربيجان وأرمينية والشام وفلسطين ومصر والحجاز ونجد وجنوبي العراق، ثم يعود إلى إيران منتهياً إلى مدينة بلخ في خراسان.
ولمصر في هذه الرحلة النصيب الأكبر، فقد أقام فيها الرحالة أكثر من ثلاث سنوات وسجّل عنه أقدم وصف لشاهد عيان على مدينة القاهرة في عصر المستنصر، أي بعد تأسيسها بنحو مائة عام تقريباً. فالكتاب صفحة ممتعة دافعة بالحياة والحيوية بما يندر أن نقرأه في كتب ذلك العصر، وزاد من قيمتها تلك المقدمة الوافية الضافية التي أضافها المترجم الدكتور يحيى الخشاب عن عصر ناصر خسرو وما اكتنفه من صراعات مذهبية وطائفية وأحداث تاريخية هائلة.
