تتناول الرواية حياة السجن، بكل ما فيها من مكابدات ومعاناة. وتركز على أربع مسائل أساسية هي: «التعذيب - القهر - الحرمان - انتهاك حقوق الإنسان وحرياته». وذلك عبر تقسيم النص إلى زمنين: من الاعتقال إلى الحكم، والثاني فترة السجن المؤبد، في جزأين و38 فصلًا.
كما تتناول بعض لمحات من أحداث الربيع العربي، الذي مزّق سطوة الطغاة، رغم فداحة الخراب وعظمة التضحيات..
تدور أحداث الرواية، في مكان محدد هو السجن، وإن تعدّدت أماكن الاعتقال. دون أن تغفل التداعيات المتصلة بالحياة العامة، والمجتمع الذي تتناوله.
عامر عبدالله، كاتب وصحافي، يتم اعتقاله من الشارع، وسط النهار، لأسباب سياسية، ليتعرض بعدها لشتى أنواع التعذيب والقهر، على يد المحققين، ثم يخضع لمحاكمة صورية غير عادلة، ليجد نفسه وسط المجرمين الجنائيين كعقوبة مضاعفة، يقضيها في عذابات الحرمان من الحرية والأسرة والعدالة.. وغيرها. إضافةً إلى أساليب القهر المادية والمعنوية، التي يستخدمها السجّان، مثل الانتهاكات البشعة لآدمية السجين، وحالات القهر والاغتصاب والجنون، التي يتعرض لها في المعتقلات والسجون.
يظل عامر عبدالله الشخصية المحورية، وفي كل فصل ثمة شخصيات يضيفها إلى الحدث الروائي، لتسرد صورة من الحياة المرّة والمهينة التي يعيشها السجين، في ظل القهر والاستبداد من جهة، والجهل والمرض والرذيلة من جهة ثانية.
يرى المؤلف هذا العمل، شهادة حية على تجربة عاشها خلف القضبان، كتبها داخل الأسوار، ونجح في تهريبها ورقة.. ورقة. وهو أيضًا شهادة تفضح القمع والاستبداد الذي تمارسه الأنظمة الديكتاتورية.
