دارت أحداث الروايّة ذات 200 صفحة في مدينة "غوتيمبا" اليابانية، بطلها سايونارا، كَان مُهتما بتفقد ودِراسة المخطُوطات القديمَة، يهوى عِلم الكون والفلك، يبحث عن الأشيَاء الأكبر منه عقلا وحكمة، ووعد نفسه بأن يعرف ما ورَاء الموت، يُمارس التأمل الباطني ويعزل نفسه بطرح عبارات استفسارية، يتعامل سايونارا مع أشخاص من مختلف العقائد الدينية، والصفات الفكرية شتى، بجلسات أسقطت مواضيع حساسة بين أطراف يناقشون فيها بقوة الحجج المنطقية والفيزيائية، آراء وتناقضات يسردها أشخاص أتوا لقمة الجبل لعنده. في الأخير يبقى البشر يخشون بعضهم إذا تحاوروا في مواضِيع غريبة مُبهمة، ولا شك أن الحياة ستبقى معادلة غير قابلة للحل.
