هذا الكتاب صدرت طبعته الأولى عام 1966 والثانية عام 1972 يتحدث عن تاريخ الخليج العربي بصورة عامة منذ أقدم العصور ويورد أهم الأحداث والحروب التي تعرضت لها سواحله ومدنه والعمليات العسكرية البحرية وأعمال القرصنة التي توالت عليه، لكنه يركز على فترة القرن التاسع عشر استناداً إلى يوميات كتبها ضابط بحري بريطاني شهد الوقائع العسكرية التي دارت في المنطقة حيث قضى عامين كاملين في خدمة البحرية الملكية على ظهر سفينة حربية مشتركة في العمليات.
ويورد المؤلف وصفاً لإمارات الخليج ودويلاتها كالبحرين وعمان ومسقط والساحل المتصالح وقطر وإيران ويتحدث عن مدنها الرئيسية مثل المنامة والمحرق والبصرة ورأس الخيمة ومسقط وهرمز وبندر عباس وبوشهر، وعن الحرف التي كان يمتهنها السكان كالزراعة وصيد واللؤلؤ، ويتطرق إلى بعض عاداتهم السائدة آنذاك.
وفي أحد الفصول يتحدث تشارلز بلجريف عن نشوء الحركة الوهابية وانتشارها وفي فصول أخرى يتكلم عن التجارة في الخليج. والطابع الغالب على الكتاب هو وصف الأعمال العسكرية والتنافس البريطاني والبرتغالي والتركي (العثماني) والفارسي والهولندي للسيطرة على مياهه وسواحله واحتلال إماراته.
