مؤلف هذه الرواية هو ريتشارد ماسون (16 مايو 1919 - 13 أكتوبر 1997) روائي وسيناريست إنجليزي، ولد بالقرب من مانشيستر Manchester، تلقى تعليمه في دورست Dorset، عمل في بداياته محررا في مجلة "الفيلم"، ثم موظفا بالمجلس الثقافي البريطاني. ومنحته الحرب العالمية الثانية فرصة لتعلم اللغة اليابانية وصار من المحققين مع أسرى الحرب اليابانيين. ألف ماسون عدة كتب منها روايته The Wind Cannot Read التي ترجمت إلى العربية باسم "سابي" وأنهاها خلال مشاركته في الحملة على بورما ونشرت سنة 1946، وتحولت إلى فيلم سنة 1958 من إخراج: رالف توماس، وبطولة: ديرك بوغارد ويوكو تاني ورونالد لويس وجون فريزر.
كانت لتجاربه أيام الحرب العالمية الثانية في منطقة الشرق الأقصى، وخصوصا إقامته مدة طويلة في هونغ كونع أثر كبير في أعماله، حيث كتب: "عالم سوزي وونغ" التي تحولت إلى مسرحية عرضت في على مسارح برودواي الأمريكية سنة 1958 ثم عرضت في فيلم سنينمائي سنة 1960 من بطولة ويليام هولدن ونانسي كوان.
استقر ماسون في إيطاليا مدة أربعين عاما وعرف بشرهه للسجائر إلى أن أصيب بسرطان الحلق ومات سنة 1997. من أعماله كذلك "الظل والذروة" (1950)، و"شجرة الحمى" (1962).
تقع أحداث هذه الرواية "سابي" في بورما والهند خلال الحرب العالمية الثانية، وتحكي قصة ضابط بريطاني يقع في غرام مدربة يابانية في مدرسة اللغة العسكرية، ولكن ظروف الحرب لم تجعل هذه العلاقة مقبولة من أي طرف، من اليابانيين ومن مواطنيه الإنجليز على السواء. ولاحقا يتعرض الضابط للأسر من طرف الجيش الياباني أثناء مشاركته في دورية في منطقة تسيطر عليها القوات اليابانية، لكنه يتمكن من الهرب والعودة إلى منطقة الحلفاء، لتكون في انتظاره مفاجأة كبيرة ومؤثرة.
