The Author Book Nigger .
ولدت نيلا لارسن في شيكاغو عام 1891 لأب أسود من إحدى جزر الهند الغربيةو أم دانماركية ، بعد ترك والدها العائلة وهي في سن الثانية تزوجت أمها من رجل آخر حملت نيلا اسمه فيما بعد.
عايشت منذ طفولتها التمييز العنصري كونها الفرد الوحيد ذو البشرة الداكنة في العائلة .
أرسلتها أمها لدراسة التمريض في جامعة فيسك بولاية تينيسي وبعد تخرجها عملت ممرضة في نيويورك وتزوجت فيها .
في عام 1964 كتبت لارسن روايتين تناولت فيهما تعقيدات الهوية العرقية .
أصدرت أولاهما في عام 1928 بعنوان "رمل منهار" ثم أتبعتها بعد عام برواية يمكن ترجمتها باسم "عبور" أما "زنج" فهو ما أرادت لارسن أن تسمي روايتها به ، غير أن ناشرها ألفرد نوبف رفضه .
توفيت عام 1964 عن عمر 72 عاما في ولاية نيويورك .

هل عرفت تلك المرأة أن أمام عينيها مباشرة في سطح فندق الدرايتون تجلس زنجية؟ غريب! مستحيل! إن البيض على درجة من الغباء تجاه هذه الأشياء، لدرجة أنهم طالما أكدوا على أنهم قادرون على تمييز الزنوج، وبأكثر الطرق سخفاً، من خلال أظافرهم، وراحات كفوفهم، وأشكال آذانهم، وأسنانهم، وغيرها من الأشياء التافهة. لطالما ظنوها إيطالية، أو إسبانية، أو مكسيكية، أو غجرية، لم يشكّوا أبداً، ولو من بعيد، عندما تكون بمفردها، أنها ربما تكون زنجية، لا، لا يمكن أن تكون المرأة التي تجلس قبالتها الآن قد عرفت. على أية حال، شعرت آيرين في المقابل بمشاعر الغضب والازدراء والخوف تتسلل إليها. ليس لأنها خجلت من كونها زنجية، أو من التصريح بهذا على الأقل. بل إن ما أثار أنزعاجها هو فكرة طردها من أي مكان، حتى بالطريقة المهذبة اللبقة التي يمكن أن يلجأ إليها فندق الدرايتون.
