يقول ستاندال في بداية الرواية: أصغوا إلي أحدثكم بقصة الراهبة الشهيرة هيلين دي كامبيريالي راهبة دير كاسترو.. هذه القصة التي أثارت الرأي العام الإيطالي والمجتمع العالي، ردحا طويلا من الزمن.. ولأعد بكم إلى حوالي العام 1555 يوم كان العصاة الأشقياء يبسطون نفوذهم العريض على ما جاور روما من بلاد. وكان الحكم والمناصب الرفيعة في المدينة الخالدة، ذلك العهد، تباع من الأسر العريقة ذات السطوة والبطش. وفي عام 1572 عام حدوث هذه القصة، ارتقى عرش القديس بطرس البابا غريغوار الثالث عشر بيونكومباني. كان هذا البابا يجمع كل الفضائل التي تخوله هذا المننصب الديني الرفيع.. إلا أننا نجده بالغ الضعف والتراخي كحاكم مدني لا يعرف كيف يسوس شعبه ولا كيف يسند مناصب القضاء إلى قضاة اتصفوا بالنزاهة والبعد عن الغرض.. كما أنه لم يستطع قطع دابر الأشقياء واللصوص الذين كانوا يعيثون في البلاد فسادا عظيما.. لشد ما كانت تحزنه الجرائم ترتكب وهو أعجز من أن يقتص من مرتكبيها.. كان يخيل إليه، وهو يلفظ الحكم بالموت، أنه يحمّل ضميره وزرا هائلا لا يقوى على احتماله. وكانت النتيجة الطبيعية لهذه السياسة الضعيفة أن غصت السبل بعدد من الأشقياء سرحوا ومرحوا وعاثوا فسادا في الأرض وعسكروا على أبواب المدينة الخالدة...
