تعتبر رواية (راتب جندي) Soliders Pay – للروائي الأمريكي الشهير وليك فوكنر الفائز بجائزة نوبل للآداب سند 1949، أول رواية يكتبها ذلك الروائي الكبير الذي كتب روائع الروايات على رأسها (الصخب والعنف) وكان له بالغ الأثر على الأدب في القرن العشرين.
تكشف هذه الرواية عن الموهبة الفذة لهذا الروائي منذ زمن مبكر ونجد فيها آثاراً واضحة وأفكاراً بقيت تتكرر في بقة رواياته وهي معاناة السود في الجنوب الأمريكي، حيث يمكن اعتبار رواياته كلها فصولاً من رواية طويلة، أو ملحمة اصطلح النقاد على تسميتها (يوكناباتاوفا).
كتب فولكنر الرواية في صيف عام 1952 حينما كان يعمل في نيو أورلينز بعد أن التقى بالكاتب الأمريكي الشهير شيروود اندرسون الذي اكتشف فيه تلك القدرة الواعدة وشجعه على كتابة رواية. فكتب هذه الرواية، ثم انطلق بعدها سيل من الأعمال الإبداعية لم يتوقف تدفقه ابتدأ برواية (مقتحم الغبار) و(ضوء في آب) وغيرها...
