رواية ذهب طروادة للكاتب روبرت بين من الأساطير اليونانية إن الذهب الذي تستخرجه مسوخ الغرافين من باطن الأرض مكون من صخر مغلف بحبيبات ذهبية تشبه الشرر الناري، وتنتزع هذه المسوخ الذهب بقوة مناقيرها الصلبة. وتوجد هذه المخلوقات في الهند، وهي مقدسة عند إله الشمس، ولها حجم الأسود وعنفوانها، بيد أنها تتفوق على هذه الأسود بفضل أجنحتها، وفي أستطاعتها قهر الأفيال والأفاعي الهائلة، إلا أنها لاتستطيع قهر النمر إذ هو يتفوق عليها بسرعته وخفة حركاته. وحين توجه شليمان للبحث عن طروادة، كان يبحث أيضاً عن منبع الحضارة الغربية، فهو أيضاً كان ذا مزاج عصري، إذ كان قلقاً، مضطرباً، ينتقل بين الظلال والأشباح، وكان موصوما بكثير من رذائل الفكتوريين، ولكنه كان يملك أيضاً، إلى حد غير مألوف قط، التزم بأن يفتش عن جذور حتي في أغواص الماضي السحيق، وفي أمكنه خالية من معالم للطريق، وعلى السائرين أن يأخذوا حذرهم عند السير. وكانت له طريقة عصرية خالصة نحو الدارسين الذين يقومون بتكوين نظرياتهم دون ملاحظة الادلة والشواهد، فلزام عليه أن يتملس الدليل ويبرزه إلى النور. وكانت طروادة ،، التي منحته أعظم استحقاف للشهرة، لازالت تستدعية، ولكن ثمة مشاكل كانت ما تزال تمضه، أهل هسارليك هو طروادة؟ أمن الممكن أن يمثل التل الصغير تلك المدينة المترامية الأطراف التي وصفها هوميروس؟ لقد قدر ان هذه المدينة التي على التل، كان في المقدور ان تتسع فقط لخمسة آلاف من السكان، مع جيش من خمسمائة جندي، وإذن فأين كانت الأثنان والستون من حجرات القصور المنفية والتي وصفها هوميروس؟
