في كتاب ديكاررت مقدمة قصيرة جدا للكاتب والمؤلف توم سوريل يعرض لنا في سطور قليلة بعض من أنجازات ديكارت في الجانب العلمي برغم من ان انجازاته في ذلك المجال فقيرة وانتاجه فيها محدود إلا انه أسهم بشكل كبير في علم النفس والفلسلفة كثير جدا فهو صاحب نظرية الحدث والاستنباط وكذلك نظرية الكوجيتو التى تفسرها الجملة الشهيرة التى قالها وهي انا افكر إذا أنا موجود وقد ساهم ديكارت في مجالات علمية كثير مثل الفيزياء والرياضيات وعلم البصريات وانتاجه في ذلك المجال كان استنباط النظرية الميتافيزيقية ويوضح لنا الكاتب ان الغرض الاساسي من نظرية الميتافيزيقية هو دعم برنامج ديكارت في العلوم، وكانت حياة رينيه ديكارت العملية قصيرة، ولم يكن إنتاجه غزيرًا، بيد أن إسهاماته في الفلسفة والعلوم باقية حتى يومنا هذا. ولعل أكثر ما اشتهر به هو مبدأ «الكوجيتو»: «أنا أفكر، إذن أنا موجود!» وبالمزج بين «الحدس» و«الاستنباط»، توصل ديكارت من هذا المبدأ إلى وجود العالم المادي. غير أن ديكارت لم يعتزم أن تكون النظرية الميتافيزيقية التي وضعها بمعزل عن عمله العلمي الذي ضم أبحاثًا مهمة في الفيزياء، والرياضيات، وعلم النفس، وعلم البصريات. وفي هذا الكتاب، يُبيِّن توم سوريل كيف كان ديكارت — في المقام الأول — مناصرًا لمنهج رياضيٍّ جديد في الفيزياء ومطبِّقًا له، وأن الغرض من النظرية الميتافيزيقية التي وضعها هو دعم برنامجه في العلوم.
