في هذا الكتاب سنرى إن العلامة الفارقة في شخص دايوجين أنه و بعد أن أدرك بئس المجتمعات البشرية أبى أن يكون بيدقاً في هذه اللعبة الفاقدة للصلاحية ولا أن يقوده الوهم كالراعٍ حيث ما يقود عامة الناس على حد تعبيره ، فرأى وارتأى وسخر وأنال الناس ما نالوه من كَدر ، حتى أعاب من َمدَح أفلاطون فهو للمديح ليس أهلاً ، لأنه كان عن تهافت الناس أعمى وأخرس بلا نقد يساير الناس في إنحرافهم ويلهوا مع اللاهين ويثرثر مع المثرثرين . كما أن دايوجين لم ينحو منحى من نحا نحو الإعتكاف والركون في رقعة مهجورة في غابة ما أو التمسح في جبل منعزل (هيراقليطس مثًلا )بعد أن رأى فساد ما رأى في الأنسان ، بل نصب نفسه طبيباً لعلل البشرية ، ولكنه أي طبيب ، طبيب ترياقه عصاً وحقيبةً ملأى ببذمر الترمس وعباءةً رثه طواها حتى تفي ما تفي ، ومشفاه برميل يدحرج فوهته حيثما تبغي الشمس.
