في مخارج الطرق ظهرت طوابير المسيحيين يحملون فوق رؤوسهم قفاف الخوص، وفي أيديهم أطفالهم، وفي عيونهم الانكسار. لم يكونوا يسيرون، كانوا يسحبون أجسامهم كأكياس الرمل، كمراسٍ عالقة في وحل المحيط، يقطرون خلفهم روائح البيوت والذكريات، يجرجرون على الأرض أقدامهم، فيرتفع الغبار، ويلتصق بشفاههم الجافة، فيمررون عليها ألسنتهم ليتذوقوا طعم الوطن للمرة الأخيرة. لم ينظروا للخلف مرة، كانوا كمن ألف الرحيل، رغم أنهم لم يرحلوا قط. بدا الطريق إلى جبل أغاثون قدريًا كتللك الخطوط الغائرة في أكفهم، ملتصقًا بنعالهم كتشققات كعوبهم التي فلقتها جلافة الأرض، لماذا لا يتحدثون؟ لماذا تدثروا بهذا الصمت الكثيف كملاحف الصوف؟ هل يخافون أن تخونهم ألسنتهم كما خانتهم سينوت؟ ماذا سيقولون لو شقت الكلمات أفواههم المخيطة بالصبر والاستسلام؟. ساروا من ساحة السوق إلى المقبرة القديمة، توقفوا ليلقوا نظرة أخيرة على جذورهم المدفونة، كانوا كأموات يودعون أمواتًا، ومضوا.
