عادة ما يطلق مصطلح رواية رمزية، على تلك الروايات التي تتناول قضايا كبرى بشكل مبسط أو ملتوي دون ذكر أسماء صريحة أو أمكنة، كرواية "خالدة" لأسامة محمود الذي امتنع عن ذكر رقعة المكان وأشار إلى الزمان وهو زمن النكسة أو ما اصطلح على تسميته بحرب الأيام الستة فاستطاع الكتابة عن كل من شارك في هذه الحرب دون تسمية إحداها. تقول الرواية حكاية العرب في ستينيات القرن المنصرم الذين فيهم "من حارب لستة دقائق ثم هرب، وهناك من قاتل لستة ساعات، وآخرون لستة أيام (...) ولكن "هناك صفوة مختارة ما زالت تقاتل حتى الآن وستبقى إلى أن يندحر البوريون.. الثوار". "تحكي الرواية قصة خلدون ابن الرابعة عشر الذي يعيش في مدينة الأغصان، وهي إحدى مدن أرض الزيتون المهددة من عدو طامع، البوريون، الذين يعيشون في أرض المستنقعات المجاورة لأرض الزيتون، يبدأ البوريون الهجوم بالرغم من أنهم وقعوا اتفاقية صلح مع حكومة أرض الزيتون منذ سنوات، يسبق الغزو أحداث مريبة تؤدي إلى اشتعال حرب أهلية في أرض الزيتون، مما يسهل سقوطها أمام غزو البوريون ومن هنا تبدأ رحلة خلدون...". "خالدة" إنها أكثر من رواية هي نثر حي بالصور الصابرة على الألم والتحدي، وبشخصيات لا يمكن نسيانها تصور الأسى الحقيقي في أكثر من بلد عربي كل ذلك عبّر عنه أسامة محمود بتعاطف شديد، وحس نقدي، ونفاذ بصيرة.
