تُعتبر قصة «خاتمة المطاف» استكمالًا لقصة «الشاعر الطموح»، حيث يُعِيْدُ فيها علي الجارم استحضاره لشخصية المتنبي وفقًا للسياق التاريخي الذي سارت عليه هذه الشخصية، وتدور هذه القصة حول تحَطُّم آمال المتنبي على صخرة من الوهم الذي نشده في مصر؛ فقد توَسَّم في كافور الإخشيدى كرم التقدير له، وكان يأمل منه أنْ يوليه إِمْرَةَ إحدى الولايات؛ ولكنَّ المتنبي تَوَسَّم المعروف في غير أهله؛ فقد خابت آماله وسقطت من علياء طموحها لتبصر الخسَّة والدناءة في صورة عبدٍ أسود ارتقى به القدر من وَضَاعَةِ الصعلوك وألبسه تيجان الملوك؛ ويُجلي علي الجارم سطوة السيف الشعري للمتنبي في هجاء كافور الإخشيدي؛ فقد أذاقه بألفاظه الشاعرة التي تحمل بين طياتها معانٍ قاهرة صنوفًا شتَّى من كئوس عذاب الشعر؛ لينتقم من كافور الذي أَرْدَاهُ ذليلًا طريدًا.
